Early declarative memory is fragile and easily forgotten. Its fragility and the immaturity of brain regions involved in personally meaningful early childhood memory, likely underlies early childhood amnesia from birth-3/4 years of age. Developmental maturity and early response of brain regions in part explain the reasons for early childhood amnesia. Parents supporting and elaborating on their toddlers’ verbalizations and reminiscing on previously experienced events, also enhance the later development of mnemonic processes. Such supportive aspects in interaction are also reflective of sufficient attachment between parent and child.
